Working
with
social enterprise New Life Learning to shape longitudinal
research into their innovative approach to personal development and
learning.
Founded
in 2001 New Life Learning is focussed on
turning the tide of disadvantage in social and economically
marginalised
communities. They do this by using to the power of the internet and IT
to
provide specialist courses in essential Personal Development and IT
Skills for
adult learners. They give the hardest to reach people in the community
new
pathways back to learning and ultimately to employment breaking the
cycle of
poverty and disadvantage.
While
there was significant evidence that New Life
Learning courses had a positive impact on participants lives while
undertaking
and immediately after the courses, there was no evidence of the
‘stickiness’ of
these outcomes over time.
The
research therefore was framed to deliver an
assessment of the long term outcomes for parents who undertook the New
Life
Learning parenting course
“Self
Esteem and Confidence for Your Child”
course
during 2005.
Participants were unemployed, single
parents, some on drug and remand programmes. The research found:.
KEY
Findings
- 40% of
participants
confirmed that they had in the past three years gone on to do other
further learning courses.
- 100% of
participants felt
their parenting and communication skills had improved. Three years
since they completed the course, they believed the skills had stayed
with them.
- 75% of
participants
reported better communication with their child’s school.
- 80% of
participants
confirmed that they now understood the value of affirming their child
self esteem and confidence.
- 80% of
participants
confirmed that their attitude to their child’s learning was
now
more positive as a result of doing the course.
- 75% of
participants noticed
a significant increase in their self esteem and confidence since
completing the course. Three years after completing the course, they
believed it was one of the best things they have ever done for
themselves.
